Comte was a student of mathematics but he denied that the positive method could be identified with the use of mathematics and statistics. He believed that the positive knowledge could be gained through four methods, i.e., observation, experiment, comparison, and historical method.

A great deal of their contributions have had a lasting impact into how sociological studies are conducted. Despite being recognized as one of the fathers of sociology, along with Auguste Comte and Émile Durkheim, Weber never saw himself as a sociologist, but as a historian. Unlike Émile Durkheim, Weber did not believe in monocausal explanations, proposing instead that for any outcome there can be multiple causes. The term "social science" may refer either to the specific sciences of society established by thinkers such as Comte, Durkheim, Marx, and Weber, or more generally to all disciplines outside of "noble science" and arts.
